PHONICS

In our nursery at Boyne Hill, we use a range of ideas and resources for teaching early phonics, including:

  • Letters and Sounds Phase 1 and Phase 2
  • Phonics Play
  • Teach your Monster to Read - we recommend the APP to use at home where you will find games and activities for children starting to learn their letters and sounds. The images, characters and songs are the same as those they will see and use in school.

 

During their time in nursery, our pupils will start to learn and practise 31 letter-sound combinations: s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, o, c, k, ck, e, u, r, h, b, f, ff, l, ll, ss, j, qu, v, w, x, y, z, zz. They will begin to blend and segment CVC words, for example, /c/a/t/  /p/i/n/  /m/u/g/ and start to recognise and read the first 6 non-decodable ‘tricky' words: the, to, I, go, no, into.

 

We use Millie and Milo, our Phonics Monster mascots, to make learning fun.
